Here you can watch the post as a video.** **High sensitivity simply explained!** What is high sensitivity? This post is for people who want a brief overview of the phenomenon of high sensitivity. It helps you recognize and understand highly sensitive people better. At the beginning, there is a quick overview of what the phenomenon of high sensitivity is. If you are asking yourself: „Am I highly sensitive?“, you can use the typical features mentioned below **as a test** and see if you might be highly sensitive yourself. ## High sensitivity, what is that? High sensitivity is a psychological personality model developed in the late 1990s by Elaine Aron. The model is based on the premise that approximately 15 to 20 percent of people exhibit specific traits. HSP, which stands for highly sensitive persons, react neurologically faster to nerve impulses, which at the same time are less filtered. And now for the typical traits. Which of these apply to you? ## Heightened sensory perception This manifests, among other things, in sensory perception. For example, they perceive smells faster and more intensely than average sensitive people. While an unpleasant perfume is longer noticeable after some time for an average sensitive person, it can heavily burden a highly sensitive person and cause concentration difficulties and headaches. The eating sounds of others are often perceived as more intense and unpleasant, just like clothing labels. At the same time, highly sensitive people can also enjoy sensory impressions more intensely. ## Tendency to overstimulation Due to the more intense sensory perception, which is less filtered, nervous overstimulation can occur more quickly in a stimulating environment. Normally, however, it only takes 5-10 minutes in a quieter environment for highly sensitive people to relax again. However, if this is not possible and they remain in this overstimulation for a longer period, HSPs need a longer recovery time than average sensitive people. ## Strong empathy They are also very empathetic. This is shown in strong compassion and the ability to read facial expressions and body language, and to recognize moods from tone of voice. The challenge is not to get carried away by the feelings of others. Due to their empathy, many HSPs avoid scenes of violence and news. ## Highly sensitive people have high social competence HSPs are prosocial and usually have everyone's well-being in mind. They are very considerate and careful not to overstep boundaries. They can accept others' opinions without devaluing them or trying to convince the other person of their own opinion. ## Good body awareness and strong intuition They have a good gut feeling and often a sixth sense. ## Reflective and interconnected thinking Furthermore, they think in a very interconnected and reflective way. This makes it easy for them to recognize connections that are difficult for average sensitives to understand or that only become apparent with a delay. They often know very quickly who the murderer is in a crime novel and can predict the end of books and movies. ## HSPs are creative Due to the intensity of sensory perception and thinking, they are very creative in many cases. This can manifest, for example, in artistic endeavors but also in finding solutions to problems. Creativity can also be reflected in everyday activities such as cooking, handicrafts, or garden design. ## High Perfectionism Highly sensitive people have a tendency towards perfectionism. When observed, they often find it difficult to show their full potential. Due to their perfectionism, they are very conscientious, and there is a challenge in not overextending themselves. Multitasking is very stressful for them, as is having to work through a large number of tasks. ## Highly sensitive people need more breaks As a rule, highly sensitive people are very helpful and friendly. Unless they are overstimulated, in which case sensory overload manifests as irritability. Highly sensitive people regularly need downtime where they can withdraw and relax, otherwise it can lead to constant nervous strain. ## HSPs are emotional people HSPs are particularly strong in their emotions. This is shown by the fact that they perceive all feelings very intensely. They also visibly express this outwardly through facial expressions and gestures. They find it easy to switch between feelings quickly. Their strong emotional life is also reflected in a deep touchability by art, music, and nature. ![High sensitivity simply explained. HSPs grasp situations quickly, are forward-looking, and keep an eye on dangers. Because they first observe in situations, they are perceived as rather quiet and reserved. However, they often also have a very lively side. ## Planning and structured HSPs organize their daily lives so as not to exceed the capacity of their energy budget. That's why they like to plan ahead and need more lead time than average sensitive people for changes to adapt to the situation. ## The High Sensitivity Test If the mentioned characteristics of high sensitivity largely apply to you, the probability that you are highly sensitive is high. If you want to know more about high sensitivity, you will find many more articles on my page that delve deeper into the topic. ## When high sensitivity is misinterpreted Highly sensitive people are often portrayed as whiny, oversensitive pansies who are flooded with impressions and emotions in everyday life, always ready to cry, and completely unable to cope with stress. In my seminars, too, I often hear "I am depressed because I am highly sensitive" or "I am much too sensitive for this insensitive, fast-paced world." The psychological distress in these people is insanely high. Often they already have quite a bit of therapy experience and have tried a lot to get along better with themselves and the world. Sometimes they try desperately to accept high sensitivity as a gift, as is repeatedly propagated. Or they put themselves into a state of helplessness because they blame high sensitivity for their suffering and thus give up personal responsibility. ## Severe suffering is usually caused by negative early experiences Following the motto: it's all like this because I am highly sensitive. They surrender to their „fate“. This is very tragic, because high sensitivity is not the origin of their suffering. That's why it doesn't work out to see high sensitivity as a gift and use it positively for oneself. Then they blame themselves for that as well and feel even worse. If we suffer so much from high sensitivity, it is usually because we have not learned to internally regulate our emotions, thoughts, and stress. Or because we do not perceive or take our body seriously and thus ignore its warning signs. If we work on our self-perception and the ability to regulate inner arousal, so much in our life can turn for the better. You can find out how to do this in my seminars and training courses.
