If we only sugarcoat everything, we are not doing justice to our reality. Especially when we haven't yet learned to deal with our high sensitivity, it can be a real burden. A "You just have to see it positively" or "High sensitivity is a great gift" is more like a slap in the face for many people. Again, we are not seen and our perception is not taken seriously. **The truth is:** HSPs have a wonderful gift, but high sensitivity can be damn exhausting – and we are allowed to say that too. ## The 10 dark sides of high sensitivity - What is the dark side of HSP? ![10 dark sides of high sensitivity 2 | High sensitivity and trauma – Coaching, Seminars, Training | Shadow sides](https://www.loesungs-coaching.de/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/10-dunkle-Seiten-der-Hochsensibilitaet-2.jpg "Folge mir auf Pinterest 📌") ### 1. Highly sensitive people are ruthless self-critics Do you know this? You go to bed in the evening and your head is racing: *"Why did I say that? How could I be so stupid? Others must be thinking..."* **The truth:** Highly sensitive people are often their own worst enemies. Through our constant rumination and intense processing of everything, we incessantly form opinions – about others, about ourselves, about even the smallest situation. **Typical thoughts:** - "I can't switch off" - "I think too much" - “I constantly criticize myself” - “Why do sensory stimuli affect me so much?” - “Why am I always so sensitive?” This is not a sign of intelligence. This is just totally exhausting. ### 2. Emotional rollercoaster without an exit option Imagine: You see a butterfly and feel pure magic. Five minutes later, you see a message and are devastated. **Welcome to the HSP life.** While others go through the day with emotional constancy, many highly sensitive people ride a roller coaster – up, down, up, down, without a break. This emotional intensity is not romantic. It is often a curse. ### 3. We are emotional vacuum cleaners HSPs absorb Emotions of others up like a vacuum cleaner: - Your boss is in a bad mood? Poof, your day is ruined - Your girlfriend is heartbroken? You feel it as if it were your own - Someone is stressed in the room? You feel it physically **This is not a sign of empathy – this is emotional exhaustion .** ### 4. Overwhelm is the standard – stimuli, stimuli, stimuli. For HSPs, overwhelm is not the exception, it is the everyday: - Loud music → Overwhelm - Clutter → Overwhelm - Three appointments in one day → Overwhelm - An unexpected call → Overwhelm **The consequences of overstimulation:** Loss of concentration, sudden outbursts of anger, or headaches. Your body goes into alarm mode because of a messy room. Many highly sensitive people react to Sensory overload very pronounced, ![Dark sides of high sensitivity. Set boundaries? What boundaries? The sad truth: Many highly sensitive people cannot set boundaries because they have never learned to. **Typical situations:** - “Can you quickly…?” → “Yes, sure!” - "Can you help me?" → "Of course!" - “Do you have time for…?” → “Yes, always!” **Why?** Because we are so hypersensitive to the feelings of others that we would physically feel their disappointment. So we'd rather go along with it – even if it harms us, because we often feel the reactions of other highly sensitive people. ### 6. Insecurity as a constant companion **The classic:** "Am I too sensitive?" How often have you heard this? From parents, teachers, partners, friends: *"Don't make such a fuss, you're too sensitive, it's not that bad."* After years of these messages, we believe it ourselves. That has profound effects on our self-esteem. We are ashamed of our sensitivity and apologize for being different. ### 7. Making decisions as a highly sensitive person – a nightmare If highly sensitive people have not yet learned to deal with their special nervous system and to feel their own needs, they are under constant stress. Then we often can't make decisions: - Which jam in the supermarket? → 10 minutes of pondering - Which restaurant? → An hour of discussion - Marry or not? → Years of uncertainty **Why?** Because we think through every decision down to the smallest detail – all possible consequences, all the feelings we could hurt, all the risks. ### 8. Perfectionism until burnout ![Highly sensitive woman who cleans up perfectionism](https://www.loesungs-coaching.de/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Perfektionismus.jpg "Alles muss perfekt sein 💎") The truth about highly sensitive perfectionism: It's not charming, it's self-destructive. **Everything has to be perfect:** - The garden - The apartment - The appearance - The work - The children Zero tolerance for mistakes – of course, only for ourselves. We are super tolerant of others. When something does go wrong, we fall apart: guilt, shame, self-reproach. ### 9. Physical warning signs are ignored The most dangerous thing: HSPs ignore their physical limits. **Typical reactions:** - Headache → "It will pass" - Back pain → "I have to push through it" - Insomnia → "Normal for me" - Exhaustion → “Oh, don’t be so dramatic” **The result:** Burnout, depression, anxiety disorders, chronic fatigue, or a mental disorder. ### 10. Develop goals? What goals? Many highly sensitive people cannot develop goals – not because they are unmotivated, but because two things come together: 1. An inner voice that says: "You won't succeed anyway" 2. We have idea what we really want because we are so focused on others **The result:** Like sitting in a taxi and saying, 'Take me home,' without saying where you live. ![A gene that symbolizes that high sensitivity is hereditary](https://www.loesungs-coaching.de/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Hochsensibilitaet-und-Gene.jpg "Die Hochsensibilität ist genetisch 🧬") ## The turning point: From shadow to light Now you might be asking yourself, 'Great, and what am I supposed to do with this information now?' **Here is the thing:** Only when we acknowledge the downsides can we work with them. The happiest highly sensitive people have one thing in common: They have stopped apologizing for their own high sensitivity. They have learned that **High sensitivity is neither a curse nor a blessing. It's simply there – a trait like brown eyes or big feet.** For the American psychologist and pioneer Elaine Aron, high sensitivity is a personality trait that is innate. **.** ## What you can take away now **✓ Your self-criticism is not your friend** Treat yourself as you would treat your best friend. **✓ Emotional boundaries are vital for survival** You don't have to carry all the pain of the world. **✓ Recognize overwhelm before you collapse** Your body sends signals – listen to them. **✓ Saying "no" is self-protection, not selfishness** It is important to feel your body so that you can make decisions. **✓ Your sensitivity is not wrong** Sometimes the reactions of others to it. ## You are not alone If you recognized yourself in this article, you know: **You are not alone. You are not broken either. You are simply highly sensitive – and that's okay.** High sensitivity is not an illness, it is a character trait. But it is also not a permanent state of wellness. It is a part of you – with light and shadow. Both sides deserve to be seen. ## Ready for the next step? **Are you tired of this cycle?** Do you finally want to learn how to deal with self-criticism, overwhelm, lack of boundaries, and all the other challenges?
